Why Learning Qur’an & Tajweed With a Qualified Teacher Matters

The Qur’an is the Book of Allah and a source of guidance for every Muslim. Learning to recite it correctly is therefore an important part of our journey in seeking Islamic knowledge.

Allah says:

“And recite the Qur’an with measured recitation.”

(Surah Al-Muzzammil 73:4)

Correct Recitation Matters

Every Arabic letter has its correct point of articulation (makhraj) and characteristics (ṣifāt). A small difference in pronunciation can change the way a word is recited.

Learning with a qualified teacher allows the student to hear the correct pronunciation and, importantly, to receive correction when mistakes occur.

Tajweed Is More Than Memorising Rules

Tajweed includes important areas such as the pronunciation of letters, rules of Nūn Sākinah and Tanwīn, Mīm Sākinah, Madd, Qalqalah, and correct stopping and beginning.

Knowing these rules theoretically is beneficial, but students also need to learn how to apply them while reciting the Qur’an.

A teacher can listen to the student’s recitation and help them put the rules into practice step by step.

Learn According to Your Level

Every student is different. Some are beginning with the Arabic alphabet, while others can already read the Qur’an and want to improve their Tajweed, fluency or memorisation.

Structured learning allows students to progress according to their level, ability and goals, rather than feeling pressured to move at the same pace as everyone else.

Consistency Brings Progress

Improving Qur’an recitation requires regular practice. Even a small amount of consistent learning can bring meaningful progress over time.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are most consistent, even if they are few.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)

Regular lessons, practice and correction can help a student develop confidence and establish a lasting relationship with the Qur’an.

More Than Learning to Read

Our goal should not only be to pronounce the words correctly. We should strive to recite the Qur’an, understand its guidance, reflect upon it and live according to it.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari)
