The Virtues of the Recitation of the Qur’an

Reward, Reflection and Guidance Through the Words of Allah

The Noble Qur’an is the speech of Allah and the final revelation sent as guidance for mankind.
Reciting it is one of the greatest acts of worship through which a Muslim can strengthen their
relationship with Allah, increase in reward and remain connected to divine guidance.

Qur’an recitation should not be limited to Ramadan or special occasions. The believer should
strive to make the Qur’an a regular companion throughout life.

Reciting the Qur’an Is an Act of Worship

Allah praises those who recite His Book and combine their recitation with worship and righteous actions.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَتْلُونَ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ
وَأَنْفَقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ سِرًّا وَعَلَانِيَةً
يَرْجُونَ تِجَارَةً لَنْ تَبُورَ

“Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah, establish prayer, and spend from what We have
provided them, secretly and publicly, hope for a transaction that will never perish.”

Surah Fatir, 35:29

This reminds us that Qur’an recitation is part of a life of worship, reflection and obedience.

Reward for Every Letter

‘Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

مَنْ قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ
وَالْحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا

“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah will receive a good deed for it,
and each good deed is multiplied tenfold.”

Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 2910

Even a small amount of sincere recitation can carry great reward. We should therefore never
consider a few verses or a short daily reading insignificant.

The Qur’an Will Intercede for Its Companions

Abu Umamah al-Bahili رضي الله عنه reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

اقْرَءُوا الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُ يَأْتِي يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ
شَفِيعًا لِأَصْحَابِهِ

“Recite the Qur’an, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor
for its companions.”

Sahih Muslim 804

The time spent reading, learning and reviewing the Qur’an is therefore an investment for the Hereafter.

There Is Reward Even When Recitation Is Difficult

‘Aishah رضي الله عنها reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that the proficient reciter
will be with the noble and righteous scribes, while the person who recites with difficulty
will have two rewards.

وَالَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَيَتَتَعْتَعُ فِيهِ
وَهُوَ عَلَيْهِ شَاقٌّ لَهُ أَجْرَانِ

“And the one who recites the Qur’an and falters in it, finding it difficult,
will have two rewards.”

Sahih Muslim 798

This is a powerful encouragement for beginners. If you read slowly, struggle with pronunciation
or need frequent correction, do not stop. Continue learning and improving.

Recite Carefully and With Reflection

Allah says:

وَرَتِّلِ الْقُرْآنَ تَرْتِيلًا

“…and recite the Qur’an in a measured manner.”

Surah Al-Muzzammil, 73:4

Qur’an recitation should not become a race to complete pages. Take your time, pronounce the
letters carefully and apply the Tajweed rules you have learned.

We should also strive to understand what we recite. Reading a reliable translation and studying
Tafsir can help us reflect upon Allah’s guidance and apply it in our lives.

Make the Qur’an Part of Your Daily Life

Consistency is more important than setting an unrealistic target. Even ten or fifteen minutes
each day can become significant over time.

• Read a manageable portion of the Qur’an daily.
• Review surahs you have already memorised.
• Listen to a skilled reciter while following from the Mushaf.
• Read the meaning of the verses.
• Recite to a teacher if you need help with Tajweed and pronunciation.

Do not wait until your recitation is perfect. Improvement comes through reading, making mistakes,
accepting correction and continuing.

The virtues of reciting the Noble Qur’an are immense. Every letter carries reward, the Qur’an
will intercede for its companions, and even the person who struggles is rewarded for their effort.
